My name is Dom Garay, and I’d like to share with you, how “The Dartbros vs Zombies!” came about.
My mom was sitting on the porch at our farm with two of her Native American friends. They had just given me a sky blue “Bear” bow and arrow set and I was launching arrows into the clouds and watching them fly. I was six years old and with every arrow I would fire off, they would applaud, laugh and smile. It was a nice moment for me. I loved that bow. I ended up shooting arrows into my uncle’s canoe, not a good idea. Then into grandmothers outside furniture, even worse. I think that was the end of the bow and arrows.
My mom had another Native friend of hers that would give me a knife whenever we would go to visit him. He’d try to sneak up behind me and I’d always catch him. He would tell me that I had a 3rd eye.
“Where’s your 3rd eye?” he would ask, and I’d think about it and then point to my butt. That cracked them up pretty good.
On the ride home in back of my mom’s red VW bug, I would admire the craftsmanship of the knife, its grooves in the handle, the blades shape, the knifes weight and how it felt in my hand. Later at the farm, I’d go around throwing it and trying to stick it into the ground or an old log.
One day my cousins and I were chasing ground squirrels through the park with sticks and knives. “Welcome to Nebraska!” There were families there trying to have a nice picnic lunch on a beautiful day and here we were running around, whooping and hollering, flinging sticks and knives at those poor little squirrels like a bunch of wild kids straight out of Lord of the Flies. Thankfully no squirrels or people got hurt. Them squirrels are fast!
So you see, like many other kids I’m sure, I’ve always had a fascination with throwing, firing, flinging or shooting just about any sharp object at pretty much anything.
Fast forward 20-some odd years to me at work one day. There was quite a bit of down time. I was looking at the dartboard they had on the wall. I had never seen any darts for it. I decided that I was going to find dem darts and I did!
So there I was throwing darts, trying to hit the bullseye. I thought I was pretty good at it. But I didn’t know any games to play with darts. So I made one up! And it was a great game. I played it everyday for a few weeks. This was like 20-some odd years ago! Yeah, I’m an old dude to some of you.
Well a couple years ago I show this game to my brother Felix Izel and he says, “Bro, I’m in! But you gotta call this game, The Dartbros vs Zombies!”
I thought that was a fantastic title and if people end up liking this game, then they are going to love the follow up title, “The Dartbros get Medieval!” which is going to be the original game that I came up with at my old job 20-some odd years ago.
